Navigating the World of Working Mom Burnout: Practical Strategies for a Better Work-Life Balance

Updated: Dec 8, 2023

Being a working mom is the ultimate juggling act- we show up every day at work to manage our career demands, and then as soon as we leave, we move into our "second shift" of the day with our families. Moms are superheroes who do everything for everyone, and it is so easy for burnout to creep in because of this.

Burnout can come on slowly, and you might not even realize what is happening until you are at a point where you can no longer give to anyone. Once you hit this point, it can start to impact both your physical and metal well-being.

Today, let's chat about the subtle signs you might be heading for burnout, and why self-care is a game-changer for busy moms like us.

Signs of Burnout

One of the most common conversations I have with working moms that find their way into my therapy office is that they are stressed and they are TIRED. So many moms (myself included!) dismiss exhaustion and constant stress as a part of life, but this is also a sign that you're headed for burnout. If this resonates with you, also watch out for:

  • Chronic Fatigue: Feeling constantly tired, both physically and emotionally.

  • Increased Irritability: A shorter fuse and heightened frustration, even over minor issues.

  • Job Satisfaction: A notable decline in enthusiasm and satisfaction at work.

  • Physical Symptoms: Frequent headaches, stomachaches, or other unexplained pains.

  • Neglecting Self-Care: Putting your needs last on the list consistently.

The Power of Self-Care:

Now that we have seen what burnout can look like, let's talk about the antidote to major burnout. Self care is one of the most important things that a busy working mom can do for herself. I know you must but thinking "but I don't have TIME for this!" but hear me out! Self care is a small time investment today that will pay big dividends for you in the future. Let's look at a few things you can do to start today:

  • Recharging Your Batteries: Self care will help you feel refreshed and energetic again. Taking time for yourself, whether it's a quiet cup of tea, a walk, or a good book, replenishes your energy.

  • Setting Boundaries: Learn to say no and set realistic boundaries at work and home. Your time is valuable, and it deserves to be respected.

  • Prioritizing Health: Exercise and a balanced diet contribute not just to physical health but also to mental well-being. Make it a priority, not an afterthought.

  • Embracing Moments of Joy: Find joy in small, everyday moments. Whether it’s a shared laugh with your child or a moment of peace before bed, cherish these simple pleasures.

  • Connecting with Others: Don’t carry the weight alone. Share your challenges with trusted friends or seek support from fellow working moms who understand the journey.

Creating a Self-Care Routine:

Now that you know what the signs of burnout are and why self care is so important to fighting burnout, let's talk about how we can help you start your self care routine today. Implementing a self care routine doesn't need to be complicated or expensive. Start with small, achievable goals:

  1. Morning Rituals: Begin your day with a few minutes of quiet reflection, a gentle stretch, or a positive affirmation to set a positive tone. I am a morning person, so I like to wake up before my kiddos to have a few minutes to myself before I have to start my day.

  2. Digital Detox: Allocate specific times to disconnect from screens, allowing your mind to unwind. I know how tricky this can be when we are go-go-go all day long, but giving yourself a small chunk of time to be off screens can make all the difference.

  3. Weekly ‘Me’ Time: Schedule regular self-care activities, whether it's a bubble bath, a hobby you enjoy, or simply quiet time for yourself.

  4. Learn to Delegate: You don’t have to do it all. Delegate tasks at work and home to create space for self-care. Trust me, I know how hard it can be to delegate sometimes, but accepting help from others can give you back some time and peace.

Burnout doesn't define you. It's a signal to pause, reassess, and prioritize your well-being. Embrace the power of self care as your most valuable tool in this incredible journey of balancing work and family. Remember, you are worthy of the care you give to others.

So pour yourself a fresh cup of coffee (and enjoy it hot, lol), take a deep breath, and let's create the self care routine that will help you feel balanced and content.

XOXO,

M
